After reading Nathan Gardel's "White Supremacy is a Lost Cause," I'm reminded once again of the triviality and inconsequential nature of race in the grand scheme of things. This present age of nativist posturing and tribal anger, characterized by Brexit and the rise of national figures like Boris Johnson, Geert Wilders, Marine Le Pen and Trump, will likely go down in history as the white man's last angry brouhaha before we all ultimately "mix and move on."

Race is really rather trivial and of no real consequence in the grand scheme of things. (Illustration created by ChatGPT 4 using prompts written by Darren Phillips on May 22, 2025. Illustration modified by Darren Phillips using Adobe Photoshop)

I like to think I've played a part in advancing "la raza cósmica" (my daughter is biracial), and I eagerly await and dream of a time when racial conflict is no longer a thing. Sadly, I'm unlikely to see this in my lifetime.

I always admired the vision of the original Star Trek creators in making the crew of the USS Enterprise racially diverse. Produced in the immediate wake of the American civil rights movement, the show offered a bold and optimistic view of where civilization was headed ... but it was inaccurate. Even as a kid it occurred to me the show would have been more realistic if the Earthlings had all appeared in some indecipherable shade of beige.

We hope la raza cósmica, pluralism, and a "civilization of the polycentric mind" are coming. At the very least, plurality and our ascent away from obvious, outward physical differences are inevitable. Can we get there without first fighting a race war in America? And when we do finally arrive, what will replace racial and ethnic differences as the chief causes of destruction and violence? I'm reminded of Hutu versus Tutsi, of Norman versus Saxon, Scot versus Englishman, and of countless other wars fought over class antagonism and religious differences.

I guess I'm feeling both hopeful and rather doubtful as I contemplate our future. ☕︎
